There is a particular pleasure in finding a record you did not know you needed—and being able to ask the person selling it what to play next.

Autumn Record Harvest brings that kind of discovery to Myrtle Avenue Brewing on Sunday, October 18, from 1 to 7 p.m. Modern Music and River City Record Show are teaming up for the free, family-friendly gathering at 633 Myrtle Avenue North in Jacksonville’s Rail Yard District.

The collaboration puts music shopping in a social setting: time to look through records, talk with sellers and follow a recommendation beyond the artists you already know. You can arrive with a carefully kept wish list or simply an afternoon to spend seeing what catches your eye.

Editor's note: A good record recommendation comes with a person attached.

This is not Modern Music’s first invitation to Myrtle Avenue Brewing. It also promoted a JAX Spring Record Fair at the brewery in March. The fall collaboration gives music fans another reason to explore the neighborhood business and connect with record culture in person.

That matters for the small pleasures of a local music community. A good recommendation comes with a person attached. Ask a seller what they have been listening to, which copy they would choose, or what makes an unfamiliar album worth a try. You might leave knowing where to look the next time you want something outside your usual rotation.

First-time collectors have a place in that conversation, too. Before buying a used record, ask about condition, grading and whether the seller knows of any playback issues. A sleeve that looks beautiful and a record that plays cleanly are different considerations. There is no need to pretend expertise; a few direct questions can make browsing more useful and more enjoyable.

For longtime collectors, the invitation is to leave room beside the must-find titles for something unexpected. Specific inventory will depend on the sellers, so think of the afternoon as a chance to explore rather than a guarantee that a particular pressing will be waiting.

Editor's note: Ask about a used record’s condition before buying.

Myrtle Avenue Brewing describes itself as a community-focused brewery, and the free-entry format makes it possible to stop in and browse without committing to a purchase. Free admission does not include records or refreshments.

Bring someone whose taste is different from yours. You may come looking for one album and leave with a new name, a new recommendation or a seller you want to find again.
