Wednesday groceries can be a quick errand. In Murray Hill, they can also be a chance to meet the person who grew something for your table.

Farm & Flea brings its fall gathering to Fishweir Brewing Company on Wednesday, October 14, from 4 to 8 p.m. The quarterly street market expands on the neighborhood’s regular Wednesday market, inviting shoppers to make an evening of exploring local food and handmade goods.

There is a purpose behind that invitation. Market manager MJ, also known as Miranda Jayde, identifies sustainability and food sovereignty as guiding values. Her stated aim is to help people understand where their food comes from and why that relationship deserves care. At a neighborhood market, that can begin with an ordinary conversation: Who grew this? What is in season? How would you prepare it?

Editor's note: A regular midweek stop can begin a lasting relationship with a local grower.

Murray Hill Farmers Market has built its weekly identity around useful food shopping. Eggs, microgreens, honey and baked goods are among the offerings it highlights, with availability changing by vendor and week. The attraction is as much about finding something to bring home for dinner as discovering a treat you did not plan on buying.

That everyday usefulness deserves attention. Supporting a grower does not have to wait for a major festival or a special shopping campaign. A regular midweek stop gives neighbors a practical place to start: buy something you need, learn who makes it, and decide whether to return next Wednesday.

Fishweir gives those exchanges a home within another Murray Hill business. The brewery hosts the weekly market alongside a calendar that also includes a run club, yoga and trivia. For someone getting to know the neighborhood, the market offers an easy introduction to both the businesses at the tables and the place bringing them together.

For the fall gathering, most sellers are expected in the Mayflower Street parking lot, with additional tables extending into Fishweir’s backyard and interior. Enter from 3438 Mayflower Street or through the brewery at 1183 Edgewood Avenue South. Take time to look beyond the first row of tables; the market stretches across more than one space.

Editor's note: The special Farm & Flea gathering starts at 4 p.m.; the regular weekly market starts at 5.

The special Farm & Flea hours begin at 4 p.m., an hour before the regular weekly market’s 5 p.m. start.

Bring a shopping list and a little curiosity. The most useful discovery may be a grower, baker or maker whose work becomes part of your week long after the fall market closes.
