For the friend whose favorite shop is always the one with something unexpected in the window, Saturday’s plans may be easy. Jacksonville Oddities & Art Market is coming to Duval Hall on October 17, with more than 100 sellers advertised and a mix that reaches from original art and vintage goods to gems, fossils and fantasy-inspired creations.

The market runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 13601 Normandy Boulevard on Jacksonville’s Westside. It is indoors, air-conditioned and open to all ages, with free public parking. The venue advertises $14.50 tickets online.

The appeal is the room it makes for particular interests. A person looking for a handmade gift, a collector searching for an unusual object and a reader who decorates around favorite fictional worlds can all have reasons to browse. You do not have to collect anything to enjoy asking how something was made.

Editor's note: An unusual object can be the beginning of a conversation with its maker.

One business planning to participate, Create Fantasy Crafts, offers a closer look at the people and work behind that range. Based in Haines City, Florida, the small business opened in May 2023 as an Etsy shop selling decals. It has since expanded into bookish, horror and pop-culture merchandise, using processes including 3D printing and laser engraving alongside handcrafted pieces.

The company’s products speak to specific enthusiasms: the pleasure of a bookshelf arranged just so, a favorite character or a taste for the eerie. Its published convention schedule includes the October 17 Jacksonville market. That gives local visitors an opportunity to meet a Florida business in person rather than discovering its work only through a screen.

A table can reveal things a product photograph cannot. You can look closely at the finish, compare sizes and ask the seller about materials, inspiration or care. Those conversations are part of the pleasure of a market devoted to objects that invite a second look.

For Jacksonville’s creative community, the mix also offers a reason to be curious about one another’s specialties. A broad arts market has space for work that does not fit a single aesthetic. Shoppers can follow their own interests and leave knowing the name of a business they would like to see again.

Editor's note: Duval Hall is on Normandy Boulevard, at the new Westside fair property.

Duval Hall is at the Greater Jacksonville Agricultural Fair’s new Westside property on Normandy Boulevard, rather than the former downtown fairgrounds. The market is a separate October event, ahead of November’s agricultural fair.

Bring your curiosity and give yourself time to browse. Whether the find is a gift, a piece for your home or simply an artist whose work stays with you, this is a Saturday built around the pleasure of discovering something a little outside the ordinary.
