A good Saturday morning can leave room for both yourself and your community. On November 7, Pups & Pilates at the Pier will bring that idea to Jacksonville’s downtown waterfront, pairing a movement class with support for the people helping the city’s shelter animals.

Ana Panama of Yoga Tour de Jax will lead the hourlong class from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on the pier beside the USS Orleck, 610 East Bay Street. Jax Tours is organizing the morning and advertises the class for all fitness levels. Tickets are $20 before any checkout charges; bring your own mat.

A portion of every ticket benefits Friends of Jacksonville Animals, an all-volunteer nonprofit with a history that stretches back to 2008. Its work supports animals received by Jacksonville Animal Care and Protective Services, giving this small gathering a connection to needs that continue long after the mats are rolled up.

Editor's note: Part of every ticket supports Friends of Jacksonville Animals.

The organization’s flagship effort is heartworm treatment. FOJA reports that, by December 2025, its program had funded treatment for more than 5,000 shelter dogs. That is the organization’s account of its cumulative work, and it helps explain why neighbors continue to support it.

Its medical assistance extends beyond that program. When shelter veterinarians request specialist care, FOJA’s Animal Treatment Program helps make services such as orthopedic surgery and dermatology available. The nonprofit also works to supply equipment, medications and food requested for animals in care. Behind the broad phrase “supporting shelter animals” are these practical tasks: covering a treatment, obtaining a needed tool and helping veterinary staff respond to an animal’s condition.

The November class offers a simple entry point into that larger effort. You can meet a local instructor, spend a morning outside and contribute through your ticket. For someone who has wanted to learn more about animal welfare in Jacksonville, it is also a reason to get acquainted with an organization doing the work throughout the year.

Adoptable dogs may join the gathering if available from Animal Care and Protective Services. Their presence is conditional, so come for the class and the cause rather than expecting to meet a particular dog.

Editor's note: Adoptable dogs may attend, depending on availability.

The class takes place beside the museum ship. Jax Tours also plans an All Paws on Deck gathering that morning, giving participants another reason to linger at the waterfront.

There is something inviting about a community gathering with a manageable first step. Here, that step is bringing a mat. The connection beyond it is to a Jacksonville teacher, a local events business and volunteers who have kept showing up for animals since 2008.
